Tanach: The Torah, Prophets, Writings: The Twenty-four Books of the Bible Newly Translated and Annotated The Stone Edition (Green) Artscroll Series Hardcover by Nosson Scherman (Mesorah Publications Ltd)
This Artscroll translation of the Tanach is very fine, for the most part. I find it very useful for studying the week's parsha and I find the commentary insightful. However, my complaints have to do with the translation of Song of Songs and Psalms. For Psalms, I would have liked a more literal translation of the Hebrew text. For Song of Songs, the editors ditch the literal translation entirely in favor of an allegorical translation in accordance with Rashi. The editors of this volume obviously thought King Solomon's songs are too erotic or sensual to be printed, even though it is part of the Holy Tanach. I would like to see an eventual update with the literal translation represented and Rashi's translation provided as commentary. Aside from these criticisms, I am thoroughly pleased with this purchase. The book itself is very substantial, with nearly 2100 pages. At the end of the book is provided timelines, charts, illustrations, maps. Included are diagrams of the eventual Third Temple (may it be rebuilt speedily in our days), the Tabernacle, and signs of Kosher animals and fish. Included also are blank Paternal and Maternal Genealogy charts, as well as blank "our family" charts, where the owner can chart his familial history and spouse, siblings, children, children's spouses, grandchildren, grandchildren's spouses, and great-grandchildren.
All in all, a very fine work.
