The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain Hardcover – April 25, 2017 by Dr. Steven R Gundry M.D. ( Harper Wave)
Both of us followed this diet very strictly for the recommended 6 weeks. We did not experience any positive results - in fact, it was a terrible experience for both of us. Let me first state that both of us started the diet within 5-10 lbs of our idea weight. We exercise moderately 5 days a week. Prior to this diet, we both ate very clean 80-90% of the time. We did not cheat, and a cooked many of the recipes in the book (most were pretty bad). The first 6 weeks of this diet, you are asked to eat pretty much no fruit, no grains, no sugar or processed foods, and very limited dairy. The vegetables are even limited to mostly leafy greens. All meat and dairy should be grass fed, grass finished for beef, pasture raised (not corn fed) poultry and eggs, and only wild caught fish. Cheese most only be certain types and imported from select countries in Europe. Lots of recommended and expensive supplements as well.
Here is a summary of our results:
Weight loss - he lost 10 lbs. I initially lost a few pounds during the initial 3 day detox but regained the (water) weight over the next 6 weeks. Net loss for me - zero!
Energy level - We both felt terrible for a solid 4 weeks! Lethargic and no energy. Could not even do a workout other than an easy yoga session or slow walk around the neighborhood. After 4 weeks, I was able to resume my previous workout routine. He still felt terrible at the 6 week mark.
Lab results - after 6 weeks my cholesterol and triglycerides actually went UP not down! (He didn’t do labs)
GI distress - We both experienced a high level of GI distress during this diet - bloating, constipation, diarrhea, etc. This diet stresses high levels of gut friendly prebiotic foods such as cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, etc. If you have any type of GI issues such as IBS, this is the WORST diet to follow.
Financial - grocery bill was astronomical! We spent over $1200 on groceries for 1 month and an additional $200 on supplements for 2 people. We were lucky in that our local farmers market vendor offers true pasture raised chicken and eggs that are not fed corn feed - otherwise it would have been very difficult to find.
For the past two weeks, we added back in some whole grains (quinoa, millet, and rice), some fruit, and cut out the high quantities of high fiber prebiotic foods. We both feel much better, have more energy, and GI issues have all but disappeared!
In summary, this is a very expensive and difficult diet to follow - not to mention very unbalanced.
