Van Gogh: Complete Works Hardcover – December 15, 2012 by Rainer Metzger (Author), Ingo F. Walther (Editor) (Taschen) (IBRArtBooks)

Beautiful and complete book of all van Gogh's artwork!

At a very advanced age, I "discovered" Vincent van Gogh. Actually, I knew who he was, saw some of his paintings in museums, etc., and liked them. However, I had read reviews of a couple of books based on his hundreds and hundreds of letters, and decided to get one (on Amazon, of course!). Well! Here I am, an old lady, and I have a new addiction - van Gogh...The excellent book of letters, prompted me to want to see "everything" that he had drawn or painted, hence this marvelous book! And...the price was fantastic. It's a wonderful, totally comprehensive coverage of all his art work. I've scanned it several times, but I still haven't delved deeply into it yet, because I'm only on page 545 of his 950 page biography (Vincent van Gogh, a Life - purchased on Amazon) - which I also recommend highly. Can't wait to really get into this book, which will probably require me to then go back and read the other books, in order to tie events and artworks together - I hope I live long enough!

Vincent van Gogh’s story is one of the most ironic in art history. He lived an unhappy and difficult life during which his work received almost no appreciation—finally killing himself by a bullet to the chest, so great was his despair—and is now widely considered one of the most important painters of all time, his works fetching record prices of tens of millions of dollars at auction. This comprehensive study of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) represents a rarity in art history: a detailed monograph on his life and art combined with a complete catalogue of his 871 paintings. These volumes also reproduce most of Van Gogh’s paintings in color.
