Shades of People Paperback – June 1, 2010 by Shelley Rotner (Author), Sheila M. Kelly (Author) (Hilday House) (IBRChildrensBooks)
My 2.5 yr old son asks for this book all the time and practically has it memorized. And because the adjectives used to describe various shades are nice additions to his vocabulary, it also encourages him to be fascinated and delighted when he notices the uniqueness of skin tones, rather than the usual type of labeling/categorizing that kids (and adults) tend to do.
Cocoa, tan, rose, and almond-people come in lots of shades, even in the same family. This exploration of one of our most noticeable physical traits uses vibrant photographs of childen and a short text to inspire young children both to take notice and to look beyond the obvious
