L.A. Heberlein is a community radio producer and host, and also the author of the books Every Man Must Build a Home,Earthquake Babies, and Sixteen Reasons Why I Killed Richard M. Nixon: A Storynovel.
He wrote in the Introduction to this 2002 book, "This book is a guide to the most interesting radio programs in the world. Such a guide was never necessary before, because you couldn't GET all the radio stations in the world, only the dozen or so in your town. Now the Internet... is changing that... This book is designed to help you find radio you love, and reduce the time you spend stumbling around looking for it. If you have never tried Internet radio, this book is also a getting-started guide, showing you, step by step, how to get connected."
He begins, "From a user's perspective, Internet radio is simple to explain. Using your Web browser, you go to the site of a favorite radio station. You click a button that says, 'Listen Live.' Music starts rolling out of your PC's speakers. This may be all you really need to know about how Internet radio works..." (Pg. xvi)
He admits, however, that "Satellite services have one strong advantage over Internet radio: you can get them in your car. Much of the time people spend listening to radio, they spend in their cars, and very few cars yet have Internet connections." (Pg. xxii) A particular advantage of Internet radio, on the other hand, is real-time playlists. "(Y)ou don't have to wait for the DJ to tell you later what you heard, you can see at a glance what you're listening to right now." (Pg. xxiv)
He concludes the Introduction, "These changes are happening right now. The purpose of this book is to get you out there being a part of them. The next section will get you started." (Pg. xxv) He then provides a HUGE directory of different stations (categorized as Classical; Rock; Other Popular Music; Experimental Music; World Music; Free-Form and Eclectic; College Stations; Foreign Language; News and Commentary; Arts and Culture; Business; Human Interest Features; Religious Services; Affinity Groups, etc.
Obviously, after ten years, some of the listings are no longer operative. This is still an excellent guide to some of the resources available on Internet radio.
