Look closely. Amongst the ten to twelve stencil patterns on each double-page spread, there is an anomaly. The shapes and the colors of the objects are the same, but there is a difference that makes one stand out from the rest.
An iron doesn’t fit with a page of ships. A snake, although it looks like a tie at a quick glance, doesn’t belong with the clothes. Also in this book is a snail hiding in with the office supplies and a lobster that’s with the insects. This is not like an I Spy book, though. The images are large and not cluttered on the page. The artwork is arranged in an orderly pattern in rows or columns.
Contraire’s illustrations contain three colors: green, black, and a pinkish red. This makes the different object a little harder to spot. There are no words on the page, but children will be able to name most of the objects by broad category--i.e. shoes, flowers, dinosaurs, tools, and fish. After finding the object that doesn’t belong, children could be prompted to answer how that object is similar and different to the others on the page.
This book will help children focus because they have to look at the details of each object.
