Turtle Hardcover – August 4, 2015 by Nick Baker (Mascot Books) (IBRChildrensBooks)
The story is well written and beautifully illustrated. It does a wonderful job of involving the reader personally by asking about experiences with which the reader could draw parallel feelings. I am happy to have purchased three of them for my nieces to read to their young children. It is a wonderful spring board for a meaningful conversation between parent and child.
Turtle is a moving story by a gifted musician sharing his struggles and triumphs growing up blind and autistic. Turtle helps the reader understand that each of us is unique and "different," yet in many ways the same--we all desire self-confidence, friendship, and acceptance. Nick Baker is exceptional. He is a talented musician, entertainer, recording artist and great storyteller! Nick journeys from isolation to inclusion within his school community with the help and advice from caring adults. Nick learns to navigate the sometimes treacherous school social environment and to use his talent to build a bridge between himself and his classmates. It has been my privilege to know Nick and work with him over the years. It is important that as individuals we embrace our differences and celebrate the unique skills and gifts. While listening to Nick perform his music, I think of Mozart and other child prodigies, how their brains are wired differently, opening up an entirely new world of creative thought, music, and expression.
Nick likes to share his stories with others. Being born totally blind and later in early adulthood being diagnosed with Autism, he experienced many challenges in his childhood and school years. Nick started writing original music in 2000. Many of his original songs have a story behind them. Nick lives with his mom and stepfather, Kathy and Raymond Passage, in Edmonds, WA, where he participates in community service work at the lo- cal senior center. He also visits schools and shares his music with students. To hear Nicks music, please visit his web site www.nickbakermusic.com.
