Outside the Fire: An Economic Collapse Story Paperback – June 26, 2018 by Boyd Craven (Permuted Press)

One great read.

This one starts with Steve Taylor and his sixteen year old daughter Amber headed for Costco. Steve is a prepper and any time he has the money he buys long term food. Canned meats, pasta, rice, beans and anything else that would help his family survive an apocalypse.

His daughter Amber and his nine year old daughter Amy just roll their eyes. Angela his wife is supportive and has no problem with extra food. All the family are shooters and Steve has more than one gun safe and they have plenty of ammo but always buy more when they can.

Dwight is a farmer who lives behind the Taylor house which is at the end of a cul de sac. Dwight has cows, pigs and chickens. Both Steve and Dwight keep getting letters from the HOA for Steve's community. Nothing the HOA has tried to enforce has worked. No pets are allowed in the community but Steve has rabbits that they raise for meat and chickens for eggs. Steve laughs at Jeff the president of the HOA and tells him those animal aren't pets and are perfectly legal according to the HOA rules. Steve and Angela are getting a little sick of the crap the HOA keeps trying to pull.

Dwight's son Carter is in the Army and god knows where he is right now as China, NK and Iran have been in battles with the US Navy. Of course the US Navy, the most powerful in the world, has prevailed thought they have suffered loses. The economy is in the toilet and the news isn't looking good for Americans. Steve just keeps buying more long term food and ammo. The price of gas is through the roof and food prices keep going up and up. Steve and Angela are more than glad that they are prepared and they know no one else in the community has prepared for anything.

When everything finally collapses Steve and his family do their best to help by donating some of the food they have. They also brought food to the Lutheran Church which is their church. The pastor there is a far sighted man and he has also been prepping.

The community fools now expect someone to provide food and water as hunters have decimated any wild game in the area. Steve and Angela are just about fed up with the whole lot of them. Steve had been hoping he wouldn't t have to shoot any of them but that all changes when the Lutheran Church is burned to the ground and the pastor and his wife are killed. The community meeting building has already been attacked and burned and the food from both places taken. Joseph the pastors son recognized one of the community members as one of the men who attacked and killed his dad. Steve will have Joseph point him out. Steve knows that someone is responsible for the deaths of the pastor and his wife and probably the attack on the community center building.

So begins one damned fine read.

This one has Steve, Angela, Amber, Amy, Mathew another very smart man, his son Mathew, Lucy who was a cop and is now Mathews girlfriend, Dwight who was a sniper in Vietnam, a man who is more than capable, Carter who is Dwight's son and his fire team who show up in the nick of time, the community idiots who expect someone else to provide food for them, the community idiots who attack the Taylor house, a Steve who has had enough and starts blowing brains out left and right, a Dwight who shoots a molotove cocktail someone is starting to throw, that someone who is covered in gas and burned alive, a Carter and his fire team who meet with Steve and the his dad, plans that have to be made and Steve Taylor and his people doing their best to protect what they have, survive and stay alive.

Five Stars and a damned good read.
