Colour and Line in Watercolour: Working with pen, ink and mixed media by Glen Scouller (Batsford)

Colour and Line in Watercolour: Working with pen, ink and mixed media by [Scouller, Glen]

Scouller's work is very inspirational, but be warned: as he himself says, this is a "how I did it" book rather than a "how to do it" book. He does tell you which materials and colors he used in the paintings and sketches throughout the book, and his considerations in approaching the work. He includes several demonstration paintings to show his basic process (this varies from painting to painting), but there are not detailed steps. His chapters are entitled "Introduction," "Tools and Materials," "Methods and Techniques," "Sketchbooks," "Painting Outdoors," "Colour and Light," "7 Favorite Themes" (these include boats and boatyards, still life, landscape and urban landscape, windows, figures, animals, farms and villages), and "Working in the Studio" (still life and portraits). A wonderful book to appreciate his color sense and style, but not for the artist who may need more instruction.
