Middle East Air Forces in the 21st Century Hardcover by Tim Ripley ( Pen and Sword)

A very useful compendium of information about airpower in the region. The individual chapters about each air arm go into considerable detail about unit structure & strength, training regimen and operational & command procedures. This also includes US and UK operations in the region. Certain aircraft are highlighted and there are a reasonable number of photos. Additional chapters cover what industrial capacity the countries have, and also all air campaigns that have taken place in this century.

The main weakness is in the maps of each country, which are small and hard-to-read and look like they were taken from an almanac or textbook. The worse part is that the air bases listed in the tables are not shown at all, and that is a significant omission. If the maps were better the book would have gotten top marks.

In view of the fact that a book like this will have to be updated periodically to maintain its relevance, let's hope that the next edition has bigger and more useful maps.
